Real-time traffic reports coming to billboards
When you're stuck bumper-to-bumper on the expressway, you presumably know it.
But Clear Channel Communication officially unveiled its program to put real-time traffic information on its network of digital billboards beginning here in the Chicago area, with plans to expand program elsewhere.
Rolling the dice, as it were, as the charter advertiser in the program is the Illinois Lottery. The deal, negotiated by OMD, calls for a 13-week run on 19 area digital billboards featuring traffic reports and regularly updated lottery information.
Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network already provides data for radio, television, navigation devices and the Internet, so it is not a major step to integrate the information into what is being called the company's Total Out of Home Network.
UPDATE: A spokeswoman representing Total Out of Home Network said the billboards program started rolling out in the last nine days or so. Locations, she said, are to include:
Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) at First Avenue
Stevenson Expressway (I-55) at the North-South Tollway (I-355), at LaGrange Road, and also at Harlem Avenue
I-57 at Sibley Avenue
Bishop Ford Freeway (I-94) at 159th Street
Edens Expressway Spur (I-94) near Waukegan Road
Tri-State Tollway (I-294/I-94) at North Avenue, at Wolf Road (O?Hare Airport Area), near Dempster, near 127th Street, and near 75th Street
Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355) at Lake Street
I-80/I-94 near Halsted
