Veteran reporter Bill Cameron returns to job he loves for WLS

All is right with the world: Bill Cameron is back where he belongs.

Three months after the highly regarded Chicago radio newsman was forced out in the "Black Friday" purge at news/talk WLS-AM (890), he's returned to his old job as political editor and City Hall reporter.

"I couldn't be happier to be back on the beat I've loved for 40 years," Cameron said Tuesday.

His return to the Citadel Broadcasting station was made possible by the resignation last week of reporter Ryan Hermes, who obtained an early release from his WLS contract to rejoin the Illinois Radio Network.

Cameron, a fixture in the City Hall press room since the era of Mayor Richard J. Daley, was the most prominent of the casualties when Citadel gutted the news department of WLS and fired 14 staffers at the end of February.

Since then, Cameron said, he has concentrated on finding a new job in Chicago broadcasting. Although he was approached about teaching or "crossing over to the dark side" and working for a politician, he never lost faith.

"I never had any ill will about what happened," he said. "My goal all along was to get back to covering Chicago politics. This is the best possible outcome." He first joined WLS in 2000 after 31 years at the former WMAQ.

In addition to daily reporting duties, Cameron also will return as host of WLS' "Connected to Chicago," the public-affairs talk show airing at 8 a.m. Sundays.
