WLS-AM's Hayes adds duties at DC's WMAL
Chicago is gaining even more influence in Washington DC. Drew Hayes, who only a few months ago returned as operations director to Citadel Broadcasting's WLS-AM 890, the station he helped turn into a talk powerhouse two decades ago, is adding programming responsibilities for Citadel's WMAL-AM, as well.
Hayes, who will remain based in Chicago, replaces, Paul Duckworth in DC.
"Drew’s added responsibilities (are) a result of the company’s vote of confidence in him and a reflection of the programming strides and ratings growth WLS-AM has already experienced," Michael Damsky, president and general manager of Citadel's WLS-AM and FM, said in a note announcing the move to his staff Monday. "WLS is Drew’s passion, but I believe that passion is deep enough for us to be able to afford to share some of it with our nation’s capital."
Damsky wrote that it was the station's "confidence in the expertise of Tracy Slutzkin, who works with Drew in managing WLS’s on-air and internet programming," that enabled it to share Hayes.
Hayes said late Monday he did not yet know what was needed at WMAL and whether there would be opportunities to share talent and resources. "There are a lot of similarities and they're both big, powerful, important stations," he said. "I want to see what makes 'MAL tick. But it is DC. That's a pretty good opportunity."
Damsky made Hayes one of his first hires after taking over WLS in mid-January. Hayes had been operations director at CBS Radio's WBBM-AM 780 and WSCR-AM 670.
A native New Yorker, Hayes first made a name for himself in Chicago from 1986 to 1988 as a talk-show host at the late WMAQ-AM. He left to program a station in Cincinnati, but then-WLS-AM boss Tom Tradup brought him back to town as program director and together they launched its talk format in August of 1989. Hayes eventually became operations director.
Hayes left WLS-AM and Chicago in 1996 for the ESPN Radio Network in Bristol, Conn., where he was general manager, later becoming program director and operations manager at Los Angeles' KABC-AM. He returned to Chicago yet again in 2001, serving CBS Radio in a variety of capacities at the late WCKG-FM, WBBM-AM and at WSCR.
