Sean Compton is being promoted to President of Programming for Tribune Broadcasting. Compton will now be responsible for the overseeing of all programming decisions for the company's 23 television stations, including Chicago's WGN-TV, its national cable station WGN America, and Chicago's WGN-AM radio station. The promotion is effective immediately.
Sean Compton has been serving as Tribune Broadcasting's Senior Vice President/Programming and Entertainment since 2008, overseeing programming and entertainment for the company's television station group and WGN America. Like Jerry Kersting and so many others who joined the Sam Zell-owned Tribune company over the last two years, Sean Compton is yet another old friend of CEO Randy Michaels from his Jacor Radio days. Compton worked with Michaels at Jacor for six years in Ohio, and stayed with him for another ten years when Jacor became Clear Channel Radio.
Compton, who is currently 36, claims to have begun his media career at the age of only 11, when he started a radio station in his parent's Indiana basement. As a young teenager in high school, he began working at WCNB in Connersville, IN and WQLK in Richmond, IN. At age 18, Compton skipped college and went to work as a DJ at WOWO Radio in Fort Wayne, IN. At age 21, he was a DJ & producer at WLW radio in Cincinnati, OH, which was owned then by Jacor. By the age of only 22, he became program director of Jacor's WSAI radio in Cincinnati, OH and was a programming assistant at Jacor's corporate office. The following year, Compton, then only 23, became Vice President of Programming for Jacor. He has been a loyal Jacor soldier since he was legally able to drink. Jacor, though no longer officially around, continues to be loyal to him, as well.
Jerry Kersting, the new President of Tribune Broadcasting, gave this quote about his long time friend and co-worker within the first press release he has been able to do under his 24 hour-old Presidency: "Sean is one of the most innovative thinkers and strategic programmers in the industry. He's been turning around the attitude at our station group and at WGN America by securing some outstanding syndicated programming -- and better programming means better ratings. He's making a huge difference in our success."
Sean Compton lives in Chicago, along with his wife and sons.
