Way too much press for a guy who never shows up in the ratings. (in a brokered time slot)
: Cigar named for Barrington resident

:
: Those who listen to Barrington resident Geoff Pinkus' radio show, might describe it as a flavorful, full body experience that goes best with a cold beer, aged red wine or fine bourbon.
: That's why Pinkus--nicknamed "The Pinker" by his radio contemporaries--decided if he was going to have a cigar named after him, it should be described the same way.
: "I'm more of a full-bodied guy but I didn't want anything that was going to blow anybody's head off," said Pinkus, adding that the six-inch cigar is best categorized as "medium-to-full bodied."
: The Pinker cigar, made by Miami-based Gurkha Cigars, was released at the end of April. But you won't see Pinkus' face plastered on the cigar or box; Pinkus said he wanted to offer a quality cigar, not just something with his face on it.
: "I didn't want to associate myself with an unknown cigar that had my picture on it and was seen as a novelty," he said. "I wanted to offer people a high-quality cigar that they would want to smoke again and again."
: Cigars are a major topic of discussion on his radio show "Livin' Large with Geoff Pinkus," in addition to playful banter about women, cars, music, sports, restaurants and other similar topics. The show airs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays on 560 WIND-AM.
: "I didn't want to come out with a cheap cigar, because after all, we're livin' large," he said.
: Pinkus is his own distributor for the cigar and so far it is available at Payless Tobacco, 227 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington; The Biltmore Country Club in North Barrington, The Wine Cellar, 361 W. Northwest Highway, Palatine and will soon be available at www.thepinkercigar.com. He said he eventually hopes to distribute the cigar nationally and plans to add more sizes this fall.
: Pinkus said he's been so caught up in distributing the cigar, he hasn't had time to reflect on how it feels to have a cigar named after him.
: "Is it a cool compliment? Absolutely," he said. "The most fun part is seeing people enjoy it."
: He said he tried about 50 different blends, styles and tobaccos before settling on the flavor for the Pinker. So far feedback has been positive from friends and cigar connoisseurs, he said.
: "It's been very well received," Pinkus said.
: To promote the cigar, Pinkus has been hitting bars, restaurants and tobacco shops throughout the Chicago area. He will be at the Tilted Kilt, 2300 Bushwood Drive, Elgin at 6 p.m. today (Thursday) and at Myron & Phil, 3900 W. Devon Ave. Lincolnwood at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
: As for the best libation to enjoy while smoking the Pinker, Pinkus said it's a matter of taste.
: "It depends on my mood," he said. "Sometimes it's wine; sometimes it's a martini."
: The Pinker costs $10-$12 each.
