terrible terrible "highlights" from both of them

: Radio wars: Roe V. Garry
: HOW THEY COMPARE | We listen to find out how they stack up head-to-head

: June 3, 2010

: BY MIKE THOMAS Staff Reporter
: Ever since Garry Meier took over the afternoon drive slot on WGN-AM (720) in April, he's been going head-to-head with his former on-air partner of eight years, Roe Conn of WLS-AM (890).

: We thought a side-by-side comparison was in order. It was devised after listening to nine hours of each broadcaster's show, during identical three-hour periods when their shows overlap, over three days.

: As you may recall, the two broadcasters parted ways in 2004 after Meier's contract talks broke down and he walked away from what was reported to be a multi-year, seven-figure deal. Aside from some fill-in shifts, his professional drought lasted several years until WCKG-FM (105.9) hired him to host weekday late mornings in 2007. That stint was short-lived; the station changed formats and call letters, and Meier was bounced in the shakeup only seven months after signing on. Before sliding into his post at WGN, Meier manned the midafternoon mike there starting at 1 p.m.

: Conn, who stayed put at WLS, has worked with a variety of cohorts, some of whom remain at his side: the ever-colorful sportscasting jester Bruce Wolf (a second-banana audition in 2004), actor-comic Bill Leff (who took Meier's vacated post in 2005 and was booted in 2009), veteran newsman Jim Johnson (still around), traffic reporter/foil Christina Filiaggi (ditto, despite a bumpy tenure of late), ex-WMAQ-Channel 5 reporter Amy Jacobson (gone), former WIND-AM (560) talker Cisco Cotto (outta there to host his own WLS morning show) and, most recently, Sun-Times columnist and national movie critic Richard Roeper (still in the house). WLS-Channel 7 anchor Ron Magers drops by for daily rap sessions as well.

: For some disappointed listeners, Conn and Meier were better together than they are apart. A reunion, though, seems unlikely. In the six years after their much-publicized divorce, these two distinct personalities have re-forged their identities and followed different paths.

: But while they no longer share a studio, it became apparent, their sensibilities often converge.

:
: TALE OF THE TAPE FOR TALK RADIO HEAVYWEIGHTS
: ROE CONN GARRY MEIER
: COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
: On a woman ordered to lose weight to keep her job at Hooters: "I don't think you can sue Hooters for telling you that you gotta be thin and have big boobs. Because I think that's why you go to work at Hooters." Interviewing WGN-Channel 9 weather guru Tom Skilling, Garry says he's grateful for his lush mane and asks the mostly bald Skilling, "Have you ever considered a hairpiece, Tom?"
: POP CULTURE GOOFS/PLUGS
: Playing "The McDonald's Song" by local rap duo Dude N Nem, Conn declares that he is "burning this to CD. I'm gonna drive by the Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's and just circle it, blasting this out of my car till I get pulled over." Imitates Larry King interviewing Mick Jagger: " 'Brown Sugar.' What was that all about? That about a black woman?"
: SOLUTIONS TO SOCIETAL PROBLEMS
: On filmmaker James Cameron being brought in by U.S. government to consult on BP oil spill: "They should ask James Cameron's ex-wife [Kathryn Bigelow] to come in because she won the Oscar and he didn't." On the South Side couple buried in their home's garbage: "Have these animals from our zoos go and clean that house out. Because first of all, they're used to sitting in stench. They don't seem to mind. So we don't have to send any poor human beings into this thing."
: THE DRUNKEN DUCHESS
: On Sarah Ferguson's claim that she'd been drinking when she accepted a bribe for access to her ex-husband: "What it does point to is this incredible, novel concept of seeing yourself on videotape and disassociating yourself from the person on the videotape, saying, 'That is not me.' Which is what goes on now. People take no responsibility for their own behavior." Invokes Homer Simpson: "Alcohol is the cause of and solution to all of life's problems."
: SPORTS BITCHING
: "Soccer's a huge sport here, but it's a huge sport of people who speak no English. You go to a Chicago Fire game, they built probably the best modern facility build for soccer in America [near] Chicago, Toyota Park, and it seats, what, 15, 17,000 people. It's constantly packed with people who go to see it. But it's like Ellis Island. There's everybody speaking a different language and there's a guy trying to change your name when you go to the hot dog stand." The entertainment at the White Sox World Series rally in 2005-- former Journey lead singer Steve Perry -- "sucked," he says. "You bring in the [Journey] band that has the Asian singer who can hit all the high notes who they found at Home Depot or on the Internet. ... It's gotta be the best it can be."
: DEALING WITH LAWBREAKERS
: "We have more than 1,000 miles of border with Mexico. It's a big border in which there's a lot of places to come across. So we must address this issue, and it's an issue nobody really wants to tackle. And I'm sorry, I'm not gonna take any crap from anybody who wants to call or text or tell me that I'm a closeted liberal because I think we should have a guest worker program because those people are idiots who don't see it. If you don't see it, you don't have your eyes open about what's going on in America." On security camera footage of perps damaging the Tribune Tower and WGN-AM showcase studio window over Memorial Day weekend: "We're going to enhance this image. ... We're gonna CSI the bejesus out of this security tape and find these people." He later added, "All of the on-air people have been deputized. We're conceal-carry now and we're ready for action."
