WCIU-TV -- best known as "the U" -- will be airing the first ever special by veteran Chicago radio personality, Garry Meier next month. Aptly named, "The Garry Meier Special" will be shown on Sunday, July 11th at 10:30pm. The one-shot program will feature numerous big name guest stars, along with Meier.
Garry Meier, currently the 3:00pm-7:00pm afternoon star of WGN-AM and an over 30 year vet of Chicago radio programs, will branch out from radio once again for this one hour special television event. Meier will be bringing his irreverent, spirited style of conversation to WCIU, as he and several Chicago & national celebrities join him to have fun and talk about their careers.
"The Garry Meier Special" will be a compilation of interviews of numerous people, including acclaimed actor Brian Dennehy, Second City alums George Wendt and Tim Kazurinsky, comedian Richard Lewis, celebrity biographer Bill Zehme, Chicago Cubs announcer Len Kasper and WGN-TV Lottery host Linda Kollmeyer.
Highlights are said to include:
- Wendt reminiscing about flunking out of college and of his genuine love affair with beer.
- Kazurinsky sharing little-known anecdotes from his "Saturday Night Live" and Second City days.
- Zehme discussing details of his exclusive Johnny Carson interview for the much-anticipated "Carson the Magnificent" biography.
- Dennehy remembers his early stage, television and movie career, including the production of "To Catch A Killer," in which he portrayed John Wayne Gacy, the suburban Chicago serial killer.
- Kollmeyer revealing her exercise regimen to prepare for her nightly lottery ball-turning spots on WGN.
- Kasper detailing his two favorite "worst" celebrity Seventh Inning Stretch singers at Wrigley Field.
- Lewis rambling on (which is the only way Lewis communicates) about working on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and his past dating paranoias.
"The show is a natural," said Executive Producer Harvey Moshman. "We're taking Garry Meier, who is Chicago talk radio royalty, tapping into his solid gold Rolodex and then putting him and his celebrity friends on the same set."
"The people at The U have created the perfect atmosphere for me to do this show. The fact that I'm on the same station that carries "Svengoolie" and the Bears/Packers game makes it all that much sweeter," said Garry Meier.
There will be no "SvenGarry," though, as the makeup needed causes his face to break out.
Although he has appeared in television specials & programs in the past with his radio partners -- once even winning a Chicago Emmy Award for a television special he did with Steve Dahl in 1981 -- this is only the second time Meier has delved into television as a solo star. The first time was back in 1994, when Meier worked for a few months as a feature reporter & comedy segment producer on the WGN Morning News.
