Another Voice Banned From WLW-AM

First Mike McConnell, and now John Phillips. You won’t hear the voice of Phillips, the long-time traffic reporter, doing Target World advertisements any more on WLW-AM. The petty vindictiveness (is that redundant?) continues at WLW-AM towards people who now work for Chicago’s Tribune Co. and Randy Michaels, the former WLW-AM/Jacor/Clear Channel radio executive.

Phillips, who worked 32 years for WLW-AM and WKRC-AM until losing his job in a 2007 budget cut, has been the voice for Target World for at least 15 years. But not anymore. Phillips — who works for Michaels as building manager for the historic Tribune Tower on Michigan Avenue, home of the Chicago Tribune, WGN-AM and the Tribune Co. — says the Target World owner was told that he’ll need a new radio spokesman. Phillips started as WKRC-AM traffic reporter in 1975, and moved to WLW-AM in 1983.

Phillips sent me this email: “The small minds at the Death Star have done it again. I’ve been doing the Target World commercials almost as far back as the groundhog episode and that was 15 years ago. They told the owner he’ll have to start using someone else… It’s a shame. JP”

Mike McConnell was banned from the WLW-AM (700) airwaves June 7, when he returned from vacation. He wasn’t allowed to finish his contract into July — or say goodbye to listeners after 25 years — after word leaked out that he told Clear Channel bosses on May 28 that he’s going to work for Michaels at Chicago’s WGN-AM starting Aug. 9. (Have you noticed that WLW is still running McConnell’s voice on commercials? He he can’t talk to you loyal listeners or say goodbye — but that doesn’t stop the station from profiting from his voice on commercials. Maybe McConnell can do the Target World spots?)

Add this to the list of things you won’t be talking about on 700 WLW-AM …. as 700 continues to act like a…. wait for it….. a Big One…..

PS: While they’re at it, why doesn’t WLW ban Nick and all the fake callers?
