Condolences to Sun-Times columnist and Fox Chicago contributor Bill Zwecker on the loss of his mother, Margaret "Peg" Zwecker. Bill Zwecker was destined to become a Sun-Times writer as he had newspaper ink in his veins. His mother was an assistant food editor for the Chicago Herald Examiner and the Chicago Times. She then became the fashion editor for the Times, which shortly afterwards became the Chicago Sun-Times, when the Sun bought the Times in 1946. She took a break from the newspaper biz to raise her son Bill, but returned to become the fashion editor of the Chicago Daily News. She also was a syndicated columnist for the Daily News & Sun-Times with her ground-breaking column "Fashionably Speaking," which combined fashion, gossip and society news. Additionally, Mrs. Zwecker was fashion contributor to WFLD-TV in the late 1960s, the very same station that her son now contributes entertainment reports to. She retired in 1978 and was was inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame in 1995. Ms. Zwecker was 99 when she passed away this week.
Condolences also go out to former WFLD/WGN anchor Mike Barz on the recent loss of his mother. Since Mike Barz recently wed WFLD reporter Tera Williams, condolences also to her on the loss of her new mother-in-law.
Speaking of Mike Barz, word has it that he will be named as news anchor for a Jacksonville, FL television station, but the process is taking much longer than expected (due to issues on the station's end, not Barz's). It should happen at some point later this summer.
