Billy Corgan & Smashing Pumpkins Benefit Concert Tonight
By MikeKessler

Billy Corgan As A Young Man

Highland Park resident/rock star Billy Corgan is returning with his million-selling Smashing Pumpkins band to where he played his first big show in 1988 - "The Metro" on Clark in Chicago - for a charity concert to help make a big difference in the life of another local musician, Matthew Leone.

Smashing Pumpkins will perform a benefit show tonight (July 27) at Metro to raise money for the medical care of Matthew, bassist for the Chicago band Madina Lake, who was seriously injured by a man who attacked him from behind.

Matthew Leone & Madina Lake are musicians without health insurance, similar to the years Billy went without insurance as he worked days at the Record Hunt store in Chicago while the Smashing Pumpkins practiced at night.

Things started to change for Billy when Kenn Goodman of the local label Pravda Records asked him and the band to contribute a cover song to a "K-Tel-like" album. Smashing Pumpkins gave him their version of "Jackie Blue" - originally by Ozark Mountain Daredevils - and they have since sold over 20 million records while being played regularly on WXRT radio.

Madina Lake also played their first big show at Metro, in May of 2005, then life quickly changed as Matthew & his brother Nathan Leone gained nationwide exposure when they appeared in a special edition of "Twin Fear Factor" and won $50,000, but that money was quickly spent on recording & touring.

Local group Kill Hannah will open the show tonight for Smashing Pumpkins, but the concert's already sold-out even though the tickets just went on sale last week. Billy has said that he doesn't want scalpers or brokers taking money from Matthew, so there shouldn't be a secondary market for legitimate tickets.

All proceeds from this July 27 concert will go to the Matthew Leone Fund division of the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, a non profit 501(c)(3) organization providing financial assistance to career musicians.
