Charlie Jones, the longtime pro football announcer who died last week, had a connection to NBC-owned WMAQ-Channel 5.

For about a year in the 1970s, he filled in for sports anchor Johnny Morris (while Morris was on leave touring Europe with his family).

"It was an odd situation because he and we knew that he was simply providing a quality fill-in until Morris returned," recalled Jim Ruddle, the retired Channel 5 news anchor. "But he was a good guy and a pro."

Mr. Jones, who held network sports job with both NBC and ABC, died June 12 of a heart attack in La Jolla, Calif. He was 77.
