With two weeks left on the format at community-based WLUW-FM (88.7), the exodus is on.

More than a dozen longtime disc jockeys have bailed out as owner Loyola University nears its July 1 date to regain control of the station and turn it over to its new School of Communication for instructional purposes.

The latest to quit, Monday morning host Mary Nisi, a seven-year veteran of WLUW, said she plans to take her show to a new Web-based station that's being developed by the Chicago Independent Radio Project.

"After so many years with WLUW, I'm looking forward to making a fresh start," she said. "When I started my show, WLUW was the only independent radio station in Chicago. Now CHIRP will be the city's real home for independent music and voice."

Other recent departures include Jenna Murfin, Matt Malooly, Michael Ardaiolo, Dustin Drase and Michael Flavor.

In addition to launching a Web station later this year, CHIRP also is seeking a new over-the-air radio outlet.
