WMAQ-Ch. 5 sportscaster Mike Adamle’s blood-alcohol level was under the legal limit after a traffic stop that led to a DUI charge, sources said Thursday.
Police have declined to release the results of a Breathalyzer test Adamle took after he was stopped early Monday in Evanston, saying they were awaiting the results of drug tests Adamle took later.
But sources close to the investigation said Thursday that Adamle’s blood-alcohol level was 0.04 percent, below the 0.08 percent legal limit.
The former Northwestern University and Chicago Bears running back suffers from epilepsy, and the drug tests might reveal if any medications Adamle might have been taking could have impaired him, sources said.
Police pulled over Adamle’s 2002 BMW about 12:55 a.m. Monday after he failed to observe a flashing red stoplight at Main and Sheridan.
Adamle, 61, an Evanston resident, agreed to the Breathalyzer test at the scene.
But the officer arrested Adamle “based on his belief that he couldn’t follow instructions and also because his balance was unsteady during” field sobriety tests, Evanston Police Chief Richard Eddington said Thursday.
Those tests gave officers probable cause to think Adamle was under the influence of a substance under than alcohol, Eddington said.
WMAQ is standing behind Adamle, who is scheduled to deliver his regular sportscast tonight.
