Less than two months before the Cubs' 2011 Opening Day, the team's front office had been thrown a curveball: Paul Friedman, the team's PA announcer for 16 years, had taken a new job and would not be returning for the upcoming season. The marketing executives panicked. "Obviously, we didn't have a lot of time to do a search for the next voice of Wrigley Field," said Wally Hayward, executive vice president and chief sales marketing officer for the Cubs. "But we needed to make sure the next voice really fit the ballpark."
