Legendary Chicago TV personality Merri Dee was hospitalized Friday evening after she began feeling ill while speaking at a West Side church.

Responders were called to the pulpit of the church where the 74-year-old Dee was speaking, Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford said. It was unclear Friday night why Dee was at the church. Dee was transported to an area hospital in stable condition, Langford said, adding that her injuries were “not life-threatening.”

Dee was the longtime face of WGN-Channel 9, first as a broadcast journalist and anchor and later as the station’s director of community relations. After nearly 40 years, she resigned from WGN in 2008 to become president of the Illinois chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).
