Here is what happened, taken from a recent Robert Feder blog entry:
• The consultant for Crawford Broadcasting calls them merely “strategic changes” at urban contemporary WPWX-FM (92.3). But the bloodbath June 10 that cost the jobs of most of the station’s full-time air staff — and relegated Tom Joyner’s syndicated morning show to sister station WSRB-FM (106.3) alone — looks more like a retreat. After 10 years of nominal competition with Clear Channel Radio urban giant WGCI-FM (107.5), Power 92 appears to be off the grid. In the Arbitron survey for May, the station tied for 27th place with a 1.5 share overall, and ranked 12th with a 3.1 share among listeners between 18 and 34. WGCI was 10th with 3.5 share overall, and third with 6.9 share in the 18-34 target demo.
