(Corrected Version)
I went to Columbia College in the mid 80's with John, who for some reason I called him "Skywalker", even though our combined vertical jump is about seven inches.
John was part of a great sports department at WCRX 88.1 FM that Chris Boden managed, and included, among others, me, Chris, John, Jim Volkman, and Jim Weiser.
John worked harder than anyone, and he had more passion for sports and journalism than anyone else I've ever come across. John overcame so many obstacles, and I am very proud to say that he was a great friend during our college years together in Chicago.
We did college basketball games together at schools like Chicago State, UIC, and North Park. Our sports department aired updates around the clock, and we covered practically every pro, college, and many high school events in town.
John was a huge part of what we did, and we spent countless hours talking about sports and broadcasting.
One time I invited John to my house on the North Shore, and despite not having a car, he arrived early and stayed late. We shot hoops in my back yard, and ate dinner with my parents, who still talk about him to this day, probably because he used so many napkins at dinner.
John inspired me. He motivated me. I am so proud that he was able to work for Sports Phone, The Trib, and Sun-Times, and I think it's great that he is still writing.
We have not talked for about 25 years, but I still think about him, and his story brought back a lot of fond memories, of John, of Columbia College, and our early years together in radio.
Who knows, maybe one day, I'll sit down with John again and talk about sports, and about life, just like we did back in the day.
