Yankee Stalwart Bobby Murcer Dies At 62

Condolences to family and friends of longtime NEW YORK YANKEE BOBBY MURCER, who died SATURDAY (7/12) in OKLAHOMA CITY. MURCER, 62, had been battling a recurrence of brain cancer this year.

The five-time All Star outfielder played for the YANKEES in 1965 through 1974 and again in 1979-83; he also played for the SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS and CHICAGO CUBS. After retiring as a player in 1983, MURCER served as a YANKEES radio analyst, worked in the team's front office, then returned to the broadcast booth on TV for a long run until sidelined by a brain tumor in DECEMBER 2006; he briefly returned to the booth in MAY 2007, but was unable to start the 2008 season with the club, returning for the MAY 2 game against SEATTLE. His book, "YANKEE FOR LIFE," was published this year, and MURCER's final public appearances were signings in support of the book. He also recorded two Country songs for COLUMBIA RECORDS.

A statement from YANKEES Chairman GEORGE STEINBRENNER said, "BOBBY MURCER was a born YANKEE, a great guy, very well-liked and a true friend of mine. I extend my deepest sympathies to his wife KAY, their children and grandchildren. I will really miss the guy."
