I always heard people talk about how Steve Dahl was a legend but lately his show was a snoozer so one day I decided to tune in (this was afternoons on WCKG). I actually thought it was pretty compelling albeit filled with a lot of dead air and stumbling through 10-minute live reads. It was compelling in the sense that he wasn't trying to be compelling. It was just him ranting and raving about whatever popped into his head. Stream of consciousness or whatever.

I listen in the morning now too. To some extent I can see why people call him "Steve Dull" but there's something about his relaxed nature that just keeps me tuned in. You almost feel like you know the guy which is a hard thing to accomplish in the business. To make listeners feel that way. There are times when I feel he completely gets away from that "you know me" vibe though and he just feels like a complete self-indulged ass who doesn't care about anyone else and doesn't want anyone else to get the joke in (like Buzz or Pat Boyle) but overall again the show has a texture that has made me hit 104.3 when I haven't done so since it was Oldies.

Now the other day I tuned into Johnny B for the first time after hearing everyone talk about his multi-million dollar return to Chicago radio and how he was a legend aswell. I have to say I was really surprised. This guy earns that million. His show is the definition of TSL-building. I couldn't stop listening. It's just like bam bam bam, tons of content lots of personality. I have to say I actually prefer Johnny B over Steve for interesting entertainment.
