ALL ACCESS has confirmed a WNBC-TV (CHANNEL 4)/NEW YORK report that CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40/Rhythmic WKTU/NEW YORK has dropped the syndicated "Wake Up With WHOOPI" show with WHOOPI GOLDBERG. THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS reported that a memo was circulated to the WKTU staff late YESTERDAY saying the station would stop carrying the show as of this morning.
Overnighter BARTEL is filling in this morning, largely playing music.
This would be the third major-market defection from the show in just over a month. CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC WISX (MY 106.1)/PHILADELPHIA dropped the program on NOVEMBER 9th (NET NEWS 11/9) and CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLIT (LITE FM)/CHICAGO pulled the plug on OCTOBER 19th (NET NEWS 10/19).
"Wake Up With WHOOPI, " syndicated by PREMIERE RADIO NETWORKS, remains on the air in nine other markets this morning -- but considering that 'KTU was her home base, for how long? WHOOPI, of course, has already has a concurrent TV gig, as co-host on "The View" to keep her busy. Co-host PAUL "CUBBY" BRYANT, on the other hand, would be an ultra-valuable commodity on the open radio market should he become a free agent -- but look for CUBBY to remain with CLEAR CHANNEL.
PREMIERE RADIO NETWORKS SVP/Public Relations AMIR FORESTER told ALL ACCESS, "While we're disappointed with WKTU's decision, we look forward to continuing our production and distribution of 'Wake Up with WHOOPI.'"
: After almost 16 months of only modest listenership, Whoopi Goldberg's morning radio show has been canceled by WKTU (103.5 FM).
: A memo circulated to the WKTU staff late yesterday said the station will stop carrying Goldberg's nationally syndicated show as of this morning. Launched on July 31, 2006, the radio show was intended to be a less strident alternative to "shock jock" and Morning Zoo radio.
: But it never found a big audience and didn't crack the top 10 in New York.
: Philly's WISX has also dropped Whoopi.
: To me, it was pretty clear Whoopi's radio show would go bye-bye once she landed her spot on The View. I bet she focuses on TV and a revived acting career again.
