CHICAGO -- WGN Radio 720 and Vibes Media today announced that for the first time, the official Chicago Cubs victory song, "Go Cubs Go," will be available to download as a ringtone to your mobile phone. WGN turned to mobile marketing partner, Chicago-based Vibes, to help them hit the ground running for the remainder of the 2008 season and gather momentum for what is shaping up to be a great year for the Cubs as they push toward the playoffs.
The official ringtone is available for purchase by texting GO to 38726 for $2.99. The "Go Cubs Go" ringtone is available to subscribers on most wireless networks and handset devices.
"Go Cubs Go" is one of those tunes you just can't seem to get out of your head. We want everyone to hear it, sing it and to cheer on the Cubs before they actually answer the call!" said Lori Brayer, Director of Marketing, WGN Radio.
Vibes Media is proud to enable WGN Radio to make "Go Cubs Go" widely available for the first time as a ringtone . . . which will have mobile phones across Chicagoland ringing in harmony all the way to the World Series!" added Alan Simkowski, VP Entertainment, Vibes Media.
Synonymous with the North Siders, "Go Cubs Go" was penned by folk legend and die-hard Cubs fan Steve Goodman, at the request of then-WGN Program Director Dan Fabian. Responding to the determination of Cubs General Manager Dallas Green to bring a winning spirit back to the beleaguered team, Fabian pounced on the opportunity to replace the team's stale theme song, "It's a Beautiful Day for a Ball Game." With Goodman in town to appear on WGN's Roy Leonard Show, Fabian pitched the idea to a receptive Goodman, who began working on the song immediately.
Despite suffering from an aggressive form of cancer, Goodman was determined to write "an anthem" -- an optimistic tune, full of upbeat phrases and hope that despite their current woes, the Cubs would one day return to winning ways. The song was first aired on Opening Day of the 1984 season and for every Cubs game thereafter. The song became an instant classic as fans grasped its catchy riffs and Goodman's exuberant vocals. It captured the very essence of what it means to be a real Cubs fan, noting in the lyrics, "You can catch it all on WGN."
Now, more than 20-years since the song made its Wrigley debut, fans across the country can proudly show their support for their beloved Cubbies by downloading "Go Cubs Go" to their handsets. The ringtone is being made available courtesy of Steve Goodman's record label, Red Pajamas Records.
