Condolences to family and friends of veteran ABC News Radio correspondent John Cooley who passed away Thursday (August 7) in Athens, Greece, after a three-year battle with cancer.

Cooley traveled the globe reporting for ABC News. He also authored several books, including “Unholy Wars: Afghanistan, America and International Terrorism” which was published in 2002.

"John’s Middle East expertise and extensive contacts created over decades made him an invaluable resource to ABC News Radio. We’ll miss his good humor and sharp insights,” says ABC News Radio VP Steve Jones. Jones adds, "Our condolences to John’s family, especially to his wife Vania, and children John and Kathy.”

In a tribute to Cooley, Mike Lee of ABC News London calls him "a journalist's journalist" writing, "John was highly influential in helping to shape the foundations of ABC News when it was growing into itself as a world-class news organization in the early 1980s. You probably never knew John, unless you were a world leader, or intelligence operative, a secret source in an outlawed group, or an expert in the major issues of the day."
