Sirius XM Radio Recruits Chris 'Mad Dog' Russo

By Alexandra Cahill

On Aug. 15 Chris “Mad Dog” Russo called into CBS Radio sports WFAN/New York -- now hosted solely by former partner, Mike Francesa -- to tell “Mike and the Mad Dog” fans that he was ready for a change after nearly 20 years. For Russo, change means signing a five year contract with the recently merged Sirius XM Satellite Radio to headline a new sports channel that will only be available to Sirius and XM subscribers.

Sirius channel 123 and XM channel 144 will be launched as Mad Dog Radio. The new channels will cover the spectrum of sports with interviews, news, live broadcasts from the biggest sporting events and engaging talk. The channel’s anchor program, “The Mad Dog Sports Show,” will also be the first original show that is available on both XM and Sirius. It will be broadcast live from Sirius’ New York City studios every weekday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. starting on Monday, September 15.

Before the official launch of Mad Dog Radio, Russo will host preview shows over the next month with fans from three of the fall season’s biggest sporting events.

Scott Greenstein, president and chief content officer for Sirius XM Radio, said, “Mad Dog’s fans are passionate about their sports and passionate about where they get their sports news and commentary from -- these are the listeners that any audio entertainment company would want. Having Mad Dog on Sirius and XM will fuel subscriber growth and create new and exciting opportunities for advertisers. Choose whatever sports analogy you want -- this is a big win.”

“No other sports talk radio comes close to what I will be able to do with Sirius XM Radio,” Russo added. “I get to create a whole channel of my kind of sports talk and am very excited to join Sirius XM which has the largest collection of sports properties in the history of radio, consisting of virtually every major sport including, MLB, NFL, NASCAR and the NHL.”
