Clear Channel CEO Mark Mays this morning (Aug. 29) continued his role as head cheerleader with a 281-word “MarkGram” memo to all employees encouraging them to embrace and capitalize on the changing media environment and to encourage Clear Channel customers to benefit in the changing environment.

Using the upcoming Labor Day weekend as a hook, Mays noted that "Labor Day can be a time of reflection amidst great activity." And he added that, “It's the perfect time to reflect on the unique and extraordinary ways that Clear Channel can help our customers manage and capitalize on change.”

He noted that the company’s “customers’ industries are [changing] -- our customers find themselves dealing with many of the same challenges we do in the media industry each day. We share a business situation, but more than that, we share an opportunity," Mays added. "Because there's no better media platform than Clear Channel's to help them solve their business problems . . . there's no more flexible collection of choices to help them seize their opportunities."

Mays, who is known for, and frequently teased by his coworkers for signing handwritten notes with a smiley face, has become a frequent correspondent from the San Antonio executive offices to the Clear Channel troops spread across the nation. His words are generally perceived as direct, honest, motivational and friendly, yet there is always a clear message that Clear Channel’s business is all about success.

"Great ideas come from everywhere -- sales, operations, creative -- there are no limits,” he said in his Friday missive. "And when we combine new ideas made possible by change with the focused effort that realizes opportunities, well, that spells success in any business."

In what could become a company bumper sticker or motto, Mays added, “Change and hard work. A matched set. A Clear Channel tradition.”

He ended the note by wishing those taking the long weekend off an enjoyable time. "And for those who will be working, please accept our thanks and appreciation."
