Fall from 'Springer'

Exec producer suddenly leaves talk show

Richard Dominick, the cynical, cigar-chomping impresario who was the real power behind the scenes at "The Jerry Springer Show," has left the building.

Staffers on the Chicago-based syndicated talk show were stunned to learn Friday that Dominick is out after 14 years as executive producer. Since 2007, he had doubled as executive producer of "The Steve Wilkos Show." No replacement was named.

The surprise move came just weeks after production resumed on the 18th season of "Springer" and second season of "Wilkos." A spokesman for NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution, which produces both shows, confirmed that Dominick was no longer with the company.

"We are fortunate to have two strong staffs in place, and production is continuing without interruption," the spokesman said.

Dominick could not be reached.

Regarded as the man most responsible for the success of "Springer," Dominick took the show to ratings heights by making it a daily circus for freaks and misfits. He also won it TV Guide's designation as the "worst show of all time," which he regarded as a badge of honor.

"The show gets high numbers because it's crazy," Dominick once explained. "But you're also inviting Jerry into your house. He's kind of like the uncle you like -- Woody Allenish. He's got a funny way about him."
