'Peanuts' Animator Bill Melendez Dies at 91

NEW YORK Animator Bill Melendez -- best known for his work on a "A Charlie Brown Christmas," "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," and many other "Peanuts" TV specials -- died Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 91.

Melendez received eight Emmy awards, 17 Emmy nominations, one Oscar nomination, and two Peabody Awards, according to The Hollywood Reporter (which is owned by the same company that owns E&P).

The Mexico native began his career at Disney and Warner Bros., and also did commercials. He got to know cartoonist Charles M. Schulz when seeking to use "Peanuts" characters in Ford ads.

Melendez -- who provided the vocalizations for Snoopy and Woodstock -- also animated TV specials inspired by the "Garfield" and "Cathy" comics.

While with Disney, Melendez worked on classic films such as "Pinocchio," "Fantasia," "Bambi," and "Dumbo." At Warner Bros., he animated Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, and other cartoon characters.
