Tribune Co.'s DePaola to leave for Newsday post
Ken DePaola, who has been in charge of national advertising for Chicago Tribune parent Tribune Co.'s newspapers and niche publications and led cross-media sales efforts, announced his resignation today.
DePaola is leaving for a top executive job with Newsday, a Long Island, N.Y., newspaper that Cablevision Systems Corp. gained control of in a $650 million transaction with Tribune Co. earlier this year.
A former associate publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times, DePaola was with Tribune Co. for nearly seven years, the last 27 months as president of Tribune Media Net. He earlier served as senior vice president of advertising for the Chicago Tribune, which hired him away from the Sun-Times to be vice president of advertising, marketing and sales.
"I really enjoyed working on both sides of the street for the last 30 years," said DePaola, a native Chicagoan who began his newspaper career 29 years ago as a Sun-Times a telemarketer just days after receiving his undegraduate degree from Ball State University in business management and marketing. "It's just been a great experience."
Randy Michaels, Tribune Co.'s chief operating officer, said in a memo to staff that Lee Jones, Tribune Media Net's New York-based senior vice president of sales and marketing, will oversee the national sales group "as we transition to new leadership. Lee knows the organization and our clients and is determined to provide them with the advertising solutions they want and need."
