WVON loses morning star Martin to national role on Joyner's show

Roland Martin, the former Chicago Defender editor who electrified Chicago radio as a talk show host, is on the move again.

Martin, who's had a starring role on Midway Broadcasting news/talk WVON-AM (1690) for three years -- including the last two as morning personality -- is leaving to join the cast of Tom Joyner's nationally syndicated morning show as a commentator.

Joyner's show airs here on Clear Channel Radio urban adult WVAZ-FM (102.7).

Martin is expected to continue on WVON through the end of the month. A search is under way for his successor.

In addition to his radio show, Martin is a contributor to CNN, a commentator for TV One cable network and a correspondent for Essence magazine.

At CNN this weekend, Martin will kick off a series of specials on the presidential race.

The first one, "Seven Weeks To Go," airing at 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, will feature a panel of experts discussing how age, race and gender bias will affect the outcome of the election.
