John Phillips Takes Flight..... To Chicago

You won't hear former helicopter traffic reporter John Phillips on Cincinnati radio any time soon. He's taken flight to Chicago to work for former boss Randy Michaels at the Tribune Co. Phillips, fired in December after 32 years on WLW-AM and WKRC-AM, is director of the Tribune Tower for Randy, the former Jacor/Clear Channel executive named Tribune chief operating officer in May.

Phillips manages the Tribune Tower services and operations -- 36 stories above the ground, and seven below. Built in 1925, the tower has 22 elevators "none of which go to all of the floors," he says. He and Betsy sold their Anderson Township house and bought a townhouse five miles north of The Loop, and six blocks west of Wrigley Field.

And he's not alone. Randy has recruited many Cincinnati Jacor/Clear Channel vets. Here's Phillips' list: Sean Compton (head of TV programming for WGN and Tribune stations); Marc Chase (interactive division president); Carolyn Gilbert (head of phone sales); her daughter Lisa Gilbert (doing Superstation research in New York); son Russ Gilbert (interactive division); Tim Dukes (interactive promotion); Steve Gable (VP of the corporate technology office); Jana Gavin (business development) and Jerry Kersting (VP for corporate strategy).

Phillips says: "I want to sincerely thank (listeners) for being so kind as to listen to me on the radio for 32 years. It sure beat working for a living... I wouldn't change a thing. (Well, maybe that groundhog deal, but nothing else.)"
