It's never a good sign when a program director announces his resignation on the air.
But that's what happened Monday when Coz Carson dropped the bombshell just as he was signing off after filling in for midday host Santita Jackson on Midway Broadcasting urban news/talk WVON-AM (1690).
After barely six months as program director, Carson said he was leaving to become morning co-host at WWRL-AM in New York, starting Jan. 2.
"I believe we accomplished a lot at WVON, but I was really only 30 percent into what I wanted to do here," he said later. "I know WVON has a great deal of potential, and I wish them success. I am extremely excited about my new opportunity."
Citing "creative differences" for the parting, Melody Spann-Cooper, president and CEO of Midway, said Wednesday she's had no contact with Carson since she heard him quit on the air.
"Whether he pulled the plug or I did, it was clear that we were not going to go into '08 together," she said. "I wish him well."
Spann-Cooper said she plans to "look inside and outside of the station" for a replacement.
