If early results of Arbitron's new ratings system hold up, it'll be a whole new ballgame for Chicago radio this fall.
Preliminary figures based on the electronic Portable People Meter system -- which replaced the old paper-diary method of measuring listenership -- show Bonneville International on the verge of dominating the market.
Among adults between the ages of 25 and 54 -- the group most coveted by advertisers -- Bonneville's classic hits WDRV-FM (97.1) ranks No. 1, and its hot adult-contemporary WTMX-FM (101.9) ranks No. 2.
Even Bonneville's weaker adult-contemporary WILV-FM (100.3) moved up to 13th in the 25-to-54 category, beating Clear Channel Radio's onetime format leader WLIT-FM (93.9).
Among adults between 18 and 49, it's another Bonneville sweep, with the Mix finishing first and the Drive finishing second.
Tribune Co.-owned news/talk WGN-AM (720) continues to win the "beauty contest" of listeners 12 and older, but it's no longer threatened by Clear Channel's urban contemporary WGCI-FM (107.5), which fell to 19th place.
In overall shares, WGN now is followed (in order) by: the Drive; Citadel Broadcasting oldies WLS-FM (94.7); CBS all-news WBBM-AM (780), and Citadel news/talk WLS-AM (890).
Rounding out the Top 10 are: the Mix; CBS country WUSN-FM (99.5); Clear Channel urban adult WVAZ-FM (102.7); Univision regional Mexican WOJO-FM (105.1), and CBS adult contemporary WCFS-FM (105.9).
