The oldest newspaper, radio, TV and "city.com" Web sites turned 14 this year and, in most cases, have evolved from experiments with a new medium to absolute cash cows for their financially troubled parent companies. Many of the sites generate millions in revenue and profits and are delivering a "strong potential for continued growth," finds a report released Wednesday (Sept. 17) on the value of Web sites.
The report, "What's a Web site Worth: Valuation Metrics for Local Web sites" by BIAfn, finds that radio and TV Web sites are now positioned for rapid growth over the next few years, resulting in "strong multiples for their Web site values."
Produced in conjunction with Borrell Associates, which focuses on local advertising, the report finds that the uppermost value of some local newspaper Web sites is between $300 million-450 million, and the values for the largest-grossing radio Web sites are in the $15 million-$20 million range.
"Obviously, there are fundamental changes taking place in the value of media properties, with the value of their Web sites becoming more meaningful as a percent of total value," says BIAfn VP Mark Fratrik. "Given their growth potential, the value multiples of media Web sites may be two to four times that of the core business."
