Tony Hunter named publisher of the Chicago Tribune
Tony Hunter, 47, today was named the new publisher, president and chief executive of the Chicago Tribune and its related products.
Hunter, who has been with Tribune Co.'s flagship in a variety of capacities since 1994, most recently as senior vice president of circulation and operations, takes the reins of the Chicago Tribune Media Group from Robert Gremillion, who, as Tribune Publishing's senior vice president, has been overseeing the paper since the exit of Scott C. Smith earlier this summer.
Hunter, who grew up in Calumet City, was responsible for the Chicago Tribune's historic agreement last year with Sun-Times Media Group to distribute copies of the rival Chicago Sun-Times, which cuts Sun-Times costs but produces revenue for the Tribune.
"Tony has spent his life in the publishing business and we still think he's the right guy for the job," Randy Michaels, Tribune Co. chief operating officer, said in a statement. "He understands the Trib and appreciates its history, but he's also a change agent, a creative leader who is eager to move the paper in a new direction so it can compete for more readers and advertisers."
