End of an era: When the Chicago Tribune was courting me as media columnist a few years ago, the one point on which I was insistent was that if the Tribune wanted me to be another Robert Feder, it should hire the Sun-Times TV/radio columnist rather than me.
For 28 years in this town, Feder has been unmatched at what he does and the way he does it. The job I accepted—the job I've done—has been to carve out a different, wider beat that, even when it overlapped with Feder's, approached things differently.
Feder, in his Tuesday column, announced he will be among those Sun-Times veterans accepting a buyout and leaving the paper in the coming weeks—for what exactly, he said he did not know.
"Covering the minutiae of the broadcast business isn't as much fun as it used to be," he wrote.
For a few years, when I was the Sun-Times television critic, he and I shared a page four days a week. I always said it was the best place in the paper to be because everyone who worked in local TV and radio had to check in with us first thing in the morning each day because Rob's column would tell them why their boss had that look on his or her face.
Now there may very well be mornings when they will just have to figure that out on their own.
