"The PocketBook Monologues" 7 p.m. Jan. 14, $35.
"My day job is news anchor for WVON radio," says Sharon McGhee. "About seven years ago it was my responsibility to report the new numbers that were coming in from the Centers for Disease Control. They told me that there was a new face of HIV/AIDS, and it was women of color."
Soon after, she saw Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues" and "I thought, 'What about our stories? What about women of color?'"
Hence "The PocketBook Monologues," a collection of first-person narratives about sex and sexual responsibility, a la Ensler, but with a decidedly black focus, as indicated by the title. Pocketbook is the euphemism, McGhee says, "used by older African-American women whenever they discuss the triangle that separates their thighs."
