Padres re-sign radio announcers
SAN DIEGO -- There will be no changes in the radio booth for the Padres in 2009 as broadcasters Ted Leitner and Andy Masur had their contracts extended by the team on Friday.
Leitner, who is finishing his 29th season as the play-by-play voice of the Padres as well as his 29th consecutive season working alongside partner Jerry Coleman, signed a two-year deal with a club option for a third season.
Masur, who is finishing his second season with the Padres, signed a two-year deal. The announcement was made on Friday by Jeff Overton, the Padres executive vice president for business operations.
"We are pleased to announce that Ted will celebrate his 30th year behind the microphone during our 40th anniversary season," Overton said in a statement. "Ted is as much a part of Padres Baseball as any player or figure in franchise history. Andy is a true professional who fit in immediately and rounds out a stellar broadcast crew."
With Coleman returning -- he is under contract through 2009 -- the radio team remains intact for 2009. Once again, games will be broadcast on XX Sports Radio (1090 AM/105.7 FM).
"XX is proud to have its relationship with the Padres and to have them as the centerpiece of the broadcast day," said John Lynch, president and CEO of the Broadcast Company of the Americas. "The historic broadcast team of Hall of Famer Jerry Coleman, Ted Leitner and Andy Masur is part of the fabric of San Diego sports."
Leitner has worked as a Padres broadcaster for all but 11 of the franchise's 39 Major League seasons and called action in each of the club's playoff years, which included 30 postseason games.
"I'm very fortunate to be in America's Finest City with a great franchise and wonderful colleagues including Jerry, Andy and everyone at the Padres and XX," said Leitner.
Leitner's previous credits include calling game action for the NFL's San Diego Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles, the NBA's San Diego Clippers, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Connecticut and San Diego State University.
Masur, who also serves as the play-by-play voice of the University of San Diego men's basketball team, previously worked as a broadcaster for the Chicago Cubs, WGN Radio and called game action for the Loyola University (Ill.) men's basketball team.
"I'm extremely excited about continuing my work with the Padres and the City of San Diego," Masur said. "I've really enjoyed my two years with the team and XX. I'm fortunate to be able to continue working with two men -- Ted and Jerry -- who mean so much to Padres fans and to the community."
