Next week marks the 20th anniversary of urban adult-contemporary WVAZ-FM (102.7). V103 was founded by radio veteran Barry Mayo, a onetime program director of urban contemporary rival WGCI-FM (107.5), who went on to become a highly successful entrepreneur and consultant.
The unique format became an instant hit in the ratings, and V103 remained among the market's top stations for two decades.
But V103's spirited rivalry with WGCI ended in 1997 when the stations came under common ownership. Today, they're both owned by Clear Channel Radio.
