Glitch knocks Blackhawks off AT & T

Old habits die hard, and the people who run AT & T U-verse apparently couldn't help themselves, blacking out most of the Blackhawks' home opener Monday for some Chicago-area subscribers even though the team has dropped its long-standing prohibitions on local TV coverage of home games.

"Some of our Chicago-area customers were unable to view the game last night because the defined team territories used in the blackout were incorrect," AT & T spokeswoman Meghan Roskopf said. "The territories have since been updated and we do not expect this to happen again."

Roskopf did not know how many were affected but said not all AT & T U-verse customers were unable to see the game. Subscribers to other TV providers were able to watch Comcast SportsNet's coverage of the Hawks' shootout loss to Nashville unimpeded.

CSN said through a spokesman it was "strictly a technical glitch by AT & T U-verse" and not unprecedented for AT & T. CSN is owned jointly by Comcast cable, the Bulls, Blackhawks, White Sox and Cubs, owned by Tribune parent Tribune Co.

A spokesman for the Hawks, who have gone to great lengths to publicize that all 82 regular-season games will be available on Chicago television, said the team fielded a few calls of complaint but had been reassured AT & T was "working feverishly to resolve it."
