NBC5 vet Warner Saunders signing off: reports

Longtime NBC5 newscaster Warner Saunders is signing off after 11 1/2 years as co-anchor of the 10 p.m. news, according to reports.

The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday on its Web site that Saunders confirmed via e-mail he would retire at the end of May -- signing off the station's 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts after the new year and then the 10 p.m. newscast later in the year.

In his final column Friday in the Sun-Times, radio and TV columnist Robert Feder said it was no longer a question of who will replace Saunders, but when.

Feder speculated that Bob Sirrott will replace Saunders, a fitting move to the 10 p.m. newscast that would reunite Sirott and Allison Rosati, who he first began anchoring NBC5's "First Thing in the Morning" in 1989.

No formal announcement on Saunders' retirement has been announce by NBC5.
