Chicago Tribune near deal to print Wall Street Journal

News Corp.-owned Dow Jones & Co. is close to an agreement to shift Chicago-area publishing of its Wall Street Journal to the Chicago Tribune's Freedom Center, which will enable Dow Jones to shutter its printing facility in Naperville.

No contract has yet been signed, but a Dow Jones spokesman on Wednesday confirmed the company's plans, part of a newspaper-industry-wide examination of the value of having one's own presses vs. outsourcing publishing work.

A Chicago Tribune spokesman, noting numerous agreements the Tribune has with other media companies to print and distribute their publications, acknowledged "discussions with Dow Jones about a possible print partnership."

Dow Jones still must finalize a closing date for its Naperville plant with the union representing the 50 workers expected to lose their jobs.
