Gary 'voice' retiring: 'Gloria Lynn' had more than 20 years on the air

GARY -- Inside the studio of the local community cable access channel, a crowd packed in the audience section to watch a local media icon prepare to do her final show after more than 20 years.

Gloria Earls-Terry has been heard on local radio broadcasts or seen on the local cable channel since 1984, using the moniker Gloria Lynn and speaking her mind, no matter what or who the subject matter.

On Oct. 29, Earls-Terry made herself comfortable on her familiar set while the television crew rushed for last-minute adjustments before the final show aired live.

Michelle Harper, who has worked as a cameraman and producer for eight years with Earls-Terry, decided her final show would be a celebration.

"She wanted a quiet send-off, but she has been such a staple in the community and she has grown to be a dear friend to me," Harper said. "I wanted her to know how much we all appreciate her."

Earls-Terry, 81, said that after more than 20 years, it was time to move on.

"My health is at a point where I cannot risk being alone, so I am going to move to South Carolina and live with my adopted daughter, Erica," she said.

Earls-Terry has two other daughters, Margo and Gail.

Born in Chicago, Earls-Terry's career as a talk-show host began in 1974 with "The Common Sense Show" at WLNR (106 FM) in Lansing, Ill.

"They just told me to talk about whatever subject I wanted," she said.

She also did a show with WLTH in Gary, but, in 1984, the local access channel debuted in Gary.

Former Gary City Councilman Charles "Chuck" Hughes said Earls-Terry joined him and Vernon Williams as first-time talk-show hosts under TCI.

"Gloria leaving will be the end of an era to keep the community informed on many subjects," Hughes said.

Earls-Terry even did street reporting during former Gary Mayor Scott King's administration, but returned to television when Comcast became the city's main cable company.

"I have interviewed people from all over; it's time to move on," she said.
