Chicago Tribune names Fleck vice president of advertising
Veteran Chicago Tribune advertising executive Bob Fleck today was named the paper's vice president of advertising, effective immediately.
Fleck replaced Jack Whisler, who had been with the Chicago Tribune for almost eight years, the last 18 months as its advertising chief.
Chicago Tribune President, Publisher and Chief Executive Tony Hunter, in a note announcing the appointment to staff, cited Fleck's competitiveness and focus on customers among his strengths.
"[Fleck] delivered exceptional results in various leadership roles," Hunter wrote. "His versatility, knowledge of client needs and ability to close deals through innovative solutions make him the best person to lead the advertising department in this challenging time."
A graduate of Elmhurst College, Fleck joined the paper in 1992 and has served in a variety of capacities. Since 2006, he has been the Chicago Tribune's advertising director for city retail, entertainment and automotive sectors.
Whisler, who joined the Chicago Tribune in early 2001 after more than two years in the Los Angeles Times' regional sales office in Dallas, began his career with the suburban Chicago Pioneer Press chain.
"Jack has played a significant role in many strategic initiatives and led the advertising department through some very challenging times," Hunter wrote. "We appreciate Jack's contributions to the company's success and wish him well in his next endeavor."
