Former WBBM-TV anchor Larry Mendte sentenced in e-mail case
If anyone could appreciate the fact that this news story came during the November ratings period, it's ultra-competitive former WBBM-Ch. 2 anchorman Larry Mendte.
Mendte got six months of house arrest today in federal court for hacking into the e-mail account of his one-time Philadelphia co-anchor and spreading gossip about her.
It could have been worse. Mendte faced a potential sentence of up to six months in prison, but instead got the half-year of home confinement, three years probation, 250 hours of community service, psychiatric assessment, computer monitoring, a $5,000 fine and $100 special assessment.
Mendte, 51, pleaded guilty this summer to hacking into the e-mail of former co-anchor Alycia Lane's e-mail hundreds of times, even after Lane, 36, was fired from CBS affiliate in Philadelphia in January. Mendte, who was accused of leaking information to the press, was let go in June.
Chicagoans probably remember Mendte for his 1991-96 stint at WBBM-TV and/or his subsequent turn on the syndicated series, "Access Hollywood." He's maried to former WBBM anchor Dawn Stensland, who works for WTXF-TV in Philadelphia.
