Clif Mercer began his career on WGN in 1956
Clif Mercer, the host for many years of the popular Music Unlimited and Music for Squares programs on WGN Radio and the Night Beat newscast on WGN Television has passed away.
Mercer began working at WGN in 1956. He served many roles, including newscaster, studio announcer and commercial voice. He could be heard on many evenings providing station breaks on WGN-TV while also making live announcements on WGN Radio.
In an interview with broadcaster Denny Farrell, Mercer reflected on his time in radio and at WGN. "Chicago has always been my favorite town, it's a great city. I grew up in the Midwest. This is home to me. I enjoyed every year that I worked in Chicago. I worked in Chicago about 30 years, 27 years actually...26 of them at WGN. I enjoyed every year, every minute."
Mercer left WGN Radio in 1982. He passed away Thursday.
