Shomper Jumps From WGN To WLS; Metheny In At WGN
TRIBUNE Talk WGN-A/CHICAGO PD BOB SHOMPER is leaving the station to join its direct competiitor, CITADEL Talk WLS-A, as PD. Replacing SHOMPER at WGN is veteran programmer KEVIN METHENY, most recetly at CLEAR CHANNEL/CLEVELAND as VP/Programming.
In a memo to staff, WGN VP/GM TOM LANGMYER said, "During his time with us, BOB has been instrumental in implementing a solid formatic structure and building a strong bridge between programming and the sales and marketing teams. He has also made solid additions to our programming team. BOB has also done much to prepare us for the recent transition to PPM, though programming adjustments designed to help us perform better with today's BUSY listeners. Please join me in thanking BOB SHOMPER for his contributions. He is a very good person and will be missed."
LANGMYER said of METHENY, "During his ten years in Cleveland, perhaps his most impressive feat was to take AM-1100 and make it the number one station in CLEVELAND and a top 25-54 performer. He did this through building the (primarily live and local news/talk) station to 'sound like CLEVELAND.' As a true radio guy, he has a great understanding and respect for WGN and what it means to CHICAGO. He also knows that WGN can be grown further in terms of relevance today as 'The Voice of CHICAGO.' KEVIN has a real ear for talent and is a proven coach with a winning track record."
METHENY's resume includes stints at MTV/VH1, KFRC-A-F/SAN FRANCISCO, KQQL/MINNEAPOLIS, WNBC-A/NEW YORK (chronicled from another perspective by HOWARD STERN in "PRIVATE PARTS"), and clusters in JACKSONVILLE and SAVANNAH
