Songwriter says he was cheated out of 'Cha Cha' royalties

/BY MARK J. KONKOL/

A Chicago DJ who wrote the hit dance song "The Cha Cha Slide" sued his record label Wednesday for allegedly not paying him royalties, according to court papers.

Willie "DJ Casper" Perry Jr. filed a lawsuit against M.O.B. Music Publishing, Inc., Tyrus Kapiece, Jerome Haywood and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Perry claims that M.O.B. published "The Cha Cha Slide" and variations of the song on compact discs, which he says he believes sold more than 500,000 copies.

The lawsuit alleges that Haywood wrongfully filed a copyright for "The Cha Cha Slide" and that M.O.B. fraudulently collected song royalties due to Perry.

M.O.B. representatives did not return a call seeking comment.
