Power 92 host says he won't drop Rod Blagojevich spot

Governor recorded endorsement for the Trey the Choklit Jok Morning Jumpoff on WPWX-FM 92.3

Every radio listener likely has heard celebrity drops—the short, recorded endorsements of a particular station.

Usher, Mary J. Blige and Jay-Z are among the performers who have been featured in such recordings for Chicago's Power 92 (WPWX-FM 92.3).

But recently the station has been using a celebrity drop of a different kind.

Every couple of days, the perky voice of Illinois' embattled governor can be heard making a plug for the hip-hop and R&B station's morning show.

"This is Gov. Rod Blagojevich," the governor says in the recording, "and I listen to Trey the Choklit Jok Morning Jumpoff on Power 92."

Trey the Choklit Jok said he made the recording of Blagojevich last spring when the governor came on his show to discuss a proposal for the CTA. Trey remembers Blagojevich telling him that he loved the show. "So I decided to have him do a drop," Trey said.

Trey was playing the Blagojevich drop every month or so until early December, when the governor was arrested on allegations he tried to sell Barack Obama's former Senate seat. With Blagojevich catapulted into the world spotlight, Trey started broadcasting the governor's endorsement more often.

"Everyone is talking about him now," Trey explained. "I thought it would be funny to play, to try to get a reaction."

Some angry listeners have demanded he take the drop off the air, arguing it's disgraceful amid the serious charges against Blagojevich.

But Trey is not persuaded. He finds the governor's bulldog personality fascinating and is determined to hold him innocent until proven guilty.

Does he buy that Blagojevich is a genuine fan of 92.3, whose core audience is African-American females ages 21 to 40?

"He's a Baby Boomer, so he's probably more into rock 'n' roll," Trey said. "But who knows? Hip-hop can draw just about anyone."
