RADIOCRUNCH/MUSICRUNCH partners KEVIN MCCABE and ANTHONY ACAMPORA take us for a trip through DECEMBER PPM results, which were released by ARBITRON last WEDNESDAY (12/31/08).
Chicago: LITE Goes Up In The Windy City; V103 Keeps Rising
The biggest spike for CHRISTMAS Music seems to have come out of CHICAGO, where CLEAR CHANNEL AC WLIT (LITE-FM) soared into the top spot across all three demos. WLIT went from 12th to 1st 25-54, and 14th to 1st with adults 18-34 and 18-49 -- a simply amazing jump in such a highly competitive month. They saw growth of 257% 18-34, 186% 18-49, and 153% 25-54 -- nothing short of amazing from NOVEMBER to DECEMBER.
25-54: WLIT soars all the way to the top spot -- placing it well ahead of the pack. It sort of overshadowed the nice increases for Urban AC sister WVAZ (V103) -- which has seen a 66% growth since SEPTEMBER and ranks a solid 2nd. CBS News WBBM-A keeps its post election momentum, rising from 4th to 3rd. BONNEVILLE Classic Rock WDRV (THE DRIVE) slid for a fifth straight month in share and drops from 2nd to 4th. UNIVISION Regional Mexican WOJO dips from 3rd to 5th. BONNEVILLE is also seeing steady decline for Hot AC WTMX (THE MIX) -- which drops from 5th to 6th and is off 24% since AUGUST. CBS Country WUSN (US99) is steady in 7th. SBS Regional Mexican WLEY (LA LEY) dips from 6th to 8th. Three stations tie for 9th: CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WGCI, CITADEL Classic Hits WLS-F (TRUE OLDIES 94-7) and EMMIS Rock WLUP.
CBS AAA WXRT inches up to 12th. WBEZ ALLIANCE non-commercial News/Talk WBEZ rises from 16th to 13th, tying them with BONNEVILLE gold-based AC WILV (LOVE-FM). CITADEL Talk WLS-A drops from 10th to 15th post election. UNIVISION Spanish Oldies WPPN (RECUERDO) remains 16th, while CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WKSC is 17th. CBS AC WCFS (FRESH) was clearly affected by WLIT's move to holiday music. The station drops from 14th to 18th, tying them with Adult Hits sister WJMK (JACK-FM) and TRIBUNE Talk WGN.
18-49: In this cell, we see WLIT #1 yet again -- and by a pretty big margin. V103 holds in 2nd place but grows almost a full share. WOJO slides from #1 to #3, with US99 still a strong 4th. WTMX dips from 3rd to 5th. WBBM-A rises from 8th to 6th -- and gets their second highest 18-49 PPM share to date. WGCI rises from 9th to 7th and achieves their best PPM 18-49 results so far. WKSC slides from 6th to 8th. A fifth straight off month for THE DRIVE, sliding from 5th to 9th (the station was 2nd as recently as AUGUST). WLEY dips from 6th to 10th.
WLUP drops from 10th to 11th, placing just slightly ahead of CBS Rhythmic WBBM-F (B96) -- which inches up from 13th to 12th. WBEZ and WPPN tie for 13th. WLS-F slides from 11th to 15th, appearing to have taken a hit from LITE-FM. WILV and WXRT both show slight gains and tie for 16th. WCFS takes a pretty significant hit from the holiday music on LITE-FM and drops from 12th to 18th. WLS-A dips from 16th to 19th, while EMMIS Alternative WKQX (Q101) moves into 20th place.
18-34: A stunning win for LITE-FM in this cell -- and growth of 257% in this demo -- knocking WOJO into the #2 position. WKSC slides from 2nd to 3rd, with WGCI dipping from 3rd to 4th -- although of these clearly related to LITE-FM's jump. V103 soars from 8th to 5th as they continue their climb. WLEY and B96 dip a notch to 6th and 7th, followed by US99, which slides from 3rd to 8th. WTMX holds in share but is off in rank from 7th to 9th, with WPPN rounding out the top 10.
