Jay Mariotti's AOL debut: 'Just because papers are dying doesn't mean writers will die with them'
"Failing newspapers are a victim of their own stubbornness, stupidity and lack of foresight in moving their news initiatives to the digital world," former Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti observes in his AOL Sports debut as a national columnist and commentator today.
Mariotti, 49, who will continue to be a regular on ESPN's "Around the Horn," confirmed his move to AOL for a variety of its platforms on Sunday.
In his first column for AOLSports.com, he notes that AOL had 54 million unique visitors to its programming content sites in November and ranks fourth in traffic among Internet news sites. It's part of "the new media mainstream," he writes.
The paper part of the newspaper industry? Acknowledging there may be a few exceptions, he compares the business to Marley in the dog's final days, but "just because papers are dying doesn't mean writers will die with them."
