Clear Channel's Traffic Network Goes HD
January 6, 2009

Clear Channel Radio's Total Traffic Network (CCTTN) has become the first company to launch real time traffic services over HD Radio channels. The service, which delivers updated traffic information in the form of more than 500 messages per minute, is now live and operational in 50 markets. Dual Electronics has launched the first commercial personal navigation device to offer this service. The traffic data for this service is created by a combination of Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network and INRIX floating car data, while all the data is continuously monitored and updated by Clear Channels staff of local traffic data producers.

"We are dedicated to providing accurate traffic information in the fastest, most efficient way possible, and are proud to now offer our advanced services via HD Radio channels," said Jeff Littlejohn, EVP of Distribution Development at Clear Channel Radio. "Even in the largest metropolitan areas, real-time traffic information is transmitted in less than a minute, providing a quick, reliable way for drivers to get where they need to go safely."

In related news, iBiquity Digital Corporation, the developer of digital HD Radio technology, announced that it is entering into the real-time traffic category with two branded in-dash head units and three personal navigation devices (PNDs). At this week's 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, five prototypes of PNDs will be unveiled, including a built-in receiver, cigarette lighter adapter, a cradle product, a dual in-dash unit and a Visteon advanced OEM platform.

"The radio industry set a precedent by coming together in 2005 to accelerate the adoption of HD Radio technology and the rollout of real-time traffic service over HD Radio broadcasts has been a collaborative effort among radio broadcasters and PND software suppliers," said iBiquity VP of Advanced Services Joe D'Angelo. "HD Radio technology is now at the size, power, form factor and functionality that can deliver on the promise of digital radio as a base for PNDs and navigation platforms. 2008 was the year of development for this service and this year is all about the commercialization."
